Kielbasa and Cabbage
For those of you in the suburbs, I'm about to give you some advice that may save you some money (unless you already do this). For those in the city, I apologize because I'm probably about to make you pretty p.o.'d.
Shop at your local indoor farmer's market if you have one! Holy cow. One of Charlie's classmates' Mom told me late last year that an indoor farmers market was going to open in the next town over and that when she shopped at a market owned by the same people she couldn't seem to ever spend over $30. I thought that was incredible and that I certainly could spend more than $30 on fruits and vegetables, pretty easily actually. Well, I kid you not, the only way I can spend over $30 is if I buy the $6 almond milk they have or the $6.29 packs of nuts. I went shopping there this morning and all of the groceries below cost....$15.61!!!!!!!
Anyway, months ago I had bought kielbasa from Lowland Farm where we usually buy our beef/pork every couple of months. I had never cooked kielbasa and am not even sure I had ever even eaten it but thought I would give it a whirl. It sat in my freezer for awhile and I finally asked my Mom what to do with it. She said it is delicious cooked with cabbage so I tried it a few weeks ago. Shao and the kids loved it. I saw some on sale at Fairway the other day and since I know I won't make it to the farm for another few weeks I decided to buy some. I cooked it up this morning using this recipe but omitted the mustard after our dislike of mustard last night. I had some leftover potatoes from the potato salad last night so pan fried them with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and parsley. Some stir fried string beans and viola....a somewhat easy dinner (although still time consuming with an infant around).
Tonight's score....8 out of 10. I like the kielbasa from Lowland Farms better. It is softer and I like knowing where my food comes from.
Does anyone else cook kielbasa? Any tips/other recipes I can try?
